'Chez ISS' As Astronauts Jessica Meir And Jack Hathaway Roast Garlic And Onion In Olive Oil

This footage shows two astronauts slowly cooking garlic and onion in olive oil aboard the International Space Station.

The footage was obtained from NASA astronaut Anil Menon on 30th August and shows Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway preparing the dish in orbit, some 400 kilometres (250 miles) above Earth.

The video shows them working with the garlic and onion in weightlessness as the oil is warmed.

Menon posted it with the caption: "Chez ISS, episode deux. The one with the onions. Jack and Jessica slow cooking."

Hathaway and Meir were filmed for a light-hearted series the crew aboard the station have named 'Chez ISS'.

An earlier episode featured kale and wasabi mustard greens that had been grown on the station over the course of a month.

Meir is commanding the Crew-12 mission, which reached the station in February and is due to return in September.

She and Hathaway flew up alongside ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot and Roscosmos cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev.

Meir has form with food in orbit, having eaten mizuna greens she harvested herself during an earlier stay in 2019.

Adenot brought her own contribution to the station's menu, a set of dishes created by the French chef Anne-Sophie Pic.

Among them is an onion and pink berry soup with gratin croutons, one of several bonus dishes developed for the flight.

Bonus items of that kind make up about a tenth of what astronauts eat in space.
