Moment Young Woman Dumps Newborn Baby Girl In Rubbish Bin

This is the moment a young woman carries her premature newborn daughter like rubbish in a black plastic bag before dumping the baby in a bin.

The footage was recorded at a condominium in Várzea Grande, in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso, part of the metropolitan area surrounding the state capital Cuiabá, in the early hours of 23 July.

Security cameras show the 25-year-old mother crossing the condominium carrying the black bag before reaching the rubbish disposal area.

She then puts it inside a bin and walks away.

A cleaner later discovered the newborn's body while sorting rubbish collected from containers at the condominium.

The baby girl was found wrapped in a plastic bag alongside the placenta and other material from the birth.

She still had her umbilical cord attached.

Post-mortem examinations found she had been born at around 26 weeks of pregnancy, equivalent to roughly six months, and weighed 750 grams.

Investigators said there were no signs of physical violence on her body.

But forensic tests established that the premature baby had breathed after being born, meaning she was alive for a short period after delivery.

Her exact cause of death has not yet been established, although investigators are considering whether the extreme prematurity may have contributed.

Civil Police later identified the condominium resident from the security footage and questioned her over the death.

She admitted being the baby's mother and confirmed she was the person seen carrying the bag to the rubbish area.

The mother told investigators she had only suspected she might be pregnant because she continued experiencing bleeding and had not received prenatal care or told her husband or relatives about the pregnancy.

According to her account, she unexpectedly went into labour in the bathroom of her home on the night of 22 July while her husband was asleep.

She said she gave birth alone and believed the baby showed no signs of life afterwards.

The mother told police she cut the umbilical cord before placing the child with the placenta and other material from the delivery and later taking them to the rubbish area.

She said she did so while in what she described as a state of desperation and emotional confusion.

She denied taking abortion-inducing substances or receiving help from anyone else.

Her husband was also questioned and broadly confirmed her account, telling police he only discovered what had happened days later after the case became public.

Investigators are continuing to examine what happened before the birth and whether labour could have been induced with an abortion drug or another form of intervention.

Detective Rogério Gomes said the investigation is expected to be completed in the coming days and that the mother is initially expected to be charged with homicide because forensic examinations found the baby had been born alive.

The possible offence could still be changed depending on outstanding forensic reports, with investigators saying an abortion offence could also be considered if evidence shows the birth was deliberately induced.
