An eight-year-old boy has died after a portable goalpost toppled onto him as he played in a school gym alongside his physical education teacher father.
The fatal accident happened around midday at the Akabe TOKI Anatolian High School Sports Hall in Sanlıurfa, a city in southeastern Turkey, local media reported on 19th August.
Mert Ali Yavuz had been accompanying his father Ibrahim, a physical education teacher at the school, to the indoor sports hall during the summer holiday.
Ibrahim was conducting a basketball training session for students when Mert Ali began playing with a portable goalpost in the hall.
The eight-year-old then attempted to climb up the net attached to the goalpost, but the heavy metal frame toppled over and landed on him.
His father and other people in the sports hall immediately rushed to the youngster and lifted the goalpost from his body.
They then called Turkey's emergency services, with paramedics dispatched to the scene after the alarm was raised.
Mert Ali was found seriously injured and was rushed to hospital by ambulance, but doctors were unable to save him despite their efforts.
His death was confirmed after he was treated at the hospital.
Mert Ali's body was handed over to his family following an autopsy before his funeral was held at Sirrin Mosque.
He was subsequently laid to rest, while an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident was launched.
