Woman Falls Into Crater As Street Collapses Beneath Her

This is the shocking moment the road gives way beneath a woman and drops her into a crater as she walks along it.

Security camera footage from 23rd August shows the collapse on Rua Sao Sebastiao in Vitoria de Santo Antao, in the Brazilian state of Pernambuco.

The video shows a slab of asphalt breaking away first, leaving her upright, before a second section falls and she drops in up to her waist.

A man walking beside her stayed outside the edge of the hole and grabbed her hands as she went down.

The ground opened at about 4pm in the Bela Vista district of the town.

The council said a sewer channel had ruptured and the leak had soaked into the ground beneath the road.

It said in a statement: "The leak caused infiltration in the soil, causing the ground to give way and opening up the crater."

A public services team was sent the following day to pump out the water that had gathered in the hole before repairing the channel and making the area good.
