Luxury-Loving Fashion Entrepreneur Nabbed On Interpol Alert After London Getaway

An on-the-run fashion entrepreneur who escaped to London after being convicted in Brazil of financing international drug trafficking was monitored by police as she posted images of her jet-set lifestyle before being arrested when she apparently thought she was off the radar and flew back home.

Larissa Nara Rezende, 42, was detained at Sao Paulo-Guarulhos International Airport in Guarulhos, part of the Sao Paulo metropolitan area and Brazil’s busiest international gateway, on 5th June.

Federal Police arrested Rezende as she stepped off a flight from the UK capital during Operation Cerco Fechado, a joint intelligence operation involving multiple security agencies.

Rezende, from Uberaba in Minas Gerais state’s Triangulo Mineiro region, had been sentenced by Brazilian justice to eight years and nine months in prison for financing international drug trafficking.

She was considered a fugitive after leaving the Triangulo Mineiro region and travelling to Europe instead of serving the sentence.

Federal Police said intelligence officers identified that the convicted businesswoman had left Brazil and gone to Europe.

Based on information gathered during the investigation, authorities requested that her name be added to Interpol’s Red Notice system, used to locate and arrest internationally wanted fugitives.

Rather than being arrested in Britain and facing a potentially lengthy extradition process, Rezende was held the moment she returned to Brazilian soil.

Investigators had monitored her movements before she was detained on arrival from London.

Despite being wanted, Rezende continued to post images of an apparently luxurious lifestyle on social media.

Photos shared online showed the fashion business owner travelling abroad and visiting destinations associated with the fashion industry.

Rezende’s alleged links to the drug trade first surfaced 13 years ago in Uberaba when police reportedly caught her handing over BRL 256,000 O(GBP 37,000) in cash to an associate at a petrol station.

At the time, she was married to convicted drug trafficker Carlos Renato Gomes, known as “Carlao”.

Authorities said Gomes controlled the so-called “Rota Caipira” smuggling route used to move narcotics from Bolivia into Brazil.

After Gomes was arrested in 2020, investigators alleged that Rezende took on a more prominent role within the organisation.

They claimed she helped expand operations from the Triangulo Mineiro region and was involved in managing international trafficking routes.

Although Rezende owned a clothing store in her hometown of Uberaba, investigators alleged the fashion business was used as a front to launder millions of reais in drug proceeds.

Federal Police said the investigation into drug trafficking and money laundering networks remained ongoing.

Officers said they were continuing efforts to identify additional suspects and dismantle criminal organisations linked to the alleged offences.

Following her arrest, Rezende was transferred to the Sant’Anna Women’s Penitentiary in Sao Paulo.

Her lawyer, Vitor Colucci Daher, had not publicly commented on the case at the time of reporting.
