A celebrity barber to top players has been jailed for 20 years for stabbing his ex-wife to death inside the barbershop she helped him build after she told him she had started a new relationship.
Gustavo Maciel, a Brazilian barber known as Guga, was sentenced by a court in Setubal, a coastal city south of Lisbon in Portugal.
Maciel was convicted of killing his ex-wife Iranilcy Oliveira inside the couple’s barbershop on 16th June 2025.
He was also ordered to be expelled from Portugal after serving his sentence.
Maciel and Iranilcy were both from Sao Miguel do Tapuio, a municipality in the northeastern Brazilian state of Piaui.
They met and married in Brazil before moving to Portugal around six years ago.
The couple were together from 2018 until 2024 and had a son, who is now four and lives in Brazil.
Iranilcy had reportedly dreamed of living in Portugal, while Maciel was said to have initially resisted the move because he had a successful barbershop in Brazil and support from his family.
But the pair eventually emigrated and opened the barbershop together in Setubal.
Maciel named the business after his nickname and built up a client list that included Brazilian footballers playing for Portuguese clubs including Benfica and Sporting CP.
The business was reportedly featured in Portuguese sports media because of its footballer clients.
But prosecutors said the couple’s relationship deteriorated after the move to Portugal and had been marked by episodes of violence.
Iranilcy went to the barbershop outside business hours on the night of 16th June to speak to Maciel.
Investigators said she told him she had started a new relationship and a violent argument followed.
Portugal’s Public Prosecutor’s Office said: “During the discussion, Gustavo Maciel picked up a knife and struck the victim several times, causing injuries that ultimately led to her death.”
Iranilcy suffered stab wounds to her chest and neck.
Maciel remained inside the barbershop with her body for around an hour after the killing.
Investigators said he did not try to hide the body and was believed to have been in shock.
He then went to a Public Security Police station in Setubal and confessed to the killing.
Officers went to the address he had given them and found Iranilcy inside the barbershop.
Paramedics were called but she was already dead.
Maciel had no previous convictions and was held in preventive custody after the killing.
He was charged with qualified homicide and domestic violence.
The court convicted him of qualified homicide but acquitted him of the separate domestic violence charge.
The sentence was handed down at the end of May and announced by Portugal’s Public Prosecutor’s Office on 9th June.
Maciel’s defence was not located by Brazilian media after the conviction.
